    — SEVENTY years ago fat-face types were in fashion. It was believed that the legibility of a new style could be largely augmented by giving to it greater blackness of face. With this end in view, the designer of the fat-face made the body of each character from one-fourth to one-half wider than that of the ordinary text-letter.
